New Planning Regulations for Smoke Alarms
As from the 1st May new planning regulations come in to effect. Its title is Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment (Smoke Alarms) Regulation 2006.
To enhance safety and save lives, as most building fire fatalities occur while people are asleep, there is clearly a need for a device to detect smoke and alert the occupants in the event of a fire within the building.
To minimise the loss-of-life in building fires the regulations cover the minimum standard which will enable owners of buildings to balance between safety and affordability of such devices (Smoke Alarm). The owner can choose a more sophisticated system if they wish If the units are installed in the correct location they increase the time available for a safe escape from a burning building.
The new regulations apply to existing building and do not have any effect on the Building Code of Australia
