"Glenhaven's busy weekend" in the Bush Fire Bulletin"Rain, hail and fire" Read the title of the story about an extraordinary day in the life of Glenhaven BrigadeA Story about the following day appeared in the RFS Bushfire Bulletin. 21/02/05 -- The weekend of the 19th and 20th of February marked one of the busiest weekends the brigade has had in recent times. Saturday saw the brigade fielding two crews assisting fellow brigades at a Hazard Reduction in the Hornsby Shire, as well as having members back at the station continuing to work on the extension to the station - preparing for pouring concrete into piers and footings that were dug the weekend prior. The crews had returned to their station and had just started to prepare the trucks for what looked like a bad storm when they were responded to assist Kellyville Brigade with a structure incident involving a house. Both Kellyville's Category 1 and 2 appliances were assisted by Glenhaven's Category 2 appliance, a Category 7 from Rouse Hill Brigade, and 2 NSW Fire Brigade Appliances. The home was extensively damaged by fire, apparently due to a lightening strike causing fire in the roof space. On being "stood down" - completing the task at Kellyville, the crew were returning to the station when they were called to assist with storm damage, initially in the area of Carinda Drive. The crew worked on two houses, when the tanker returned to the station to change crews. The fresh crew returned and completed their work in Carinda Drive, where they were joined by the Glenhaven's Category 9 vehicle which had been working on storm damage in the Crego Road area not long after Glenhaven 2 was called to assist Kellyville. Upon completion of their work in Carinda Drive the crews then moved on to other areas of Glenhaven working until approximately 11.00pm. It resulted in some very wet members trying to keep residents dry! Glenhaven Brigade also fielded a crew in the Category 2 appliance for further assistance to the SES with storm damage work on Sunday. The crew worked in Castle Hill, Northmead and Glenhaven, returning to the station at approximately 7.00pm |
